The funeral service for Ione V. Zahalka, 90, of Ipswich, is 3:00 pm Saturday at the UCC- Congregational Church, located on SD Highway 45, in Ipswich. Rev. Enno Limvere will lead the worship.
Visitation is 6-8:00 pm Friday at Gramm Funeral Home in Ipswich and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Ione was born November 20, 1920 to William J and Elsie (Garrett) Crawford at Wecota, SD. She was raised on the family farm and attended Myron Township School through the eighth grade.
Following her schooling she helped on the farm and worked for area families by watching their children and helping with household chores.
Ione married Adolph J. Zahalka on May 9, 1944 at Faulkton, SD. They made their home on a farm south of Ipswich. She helped Adolph with all of the tasks of the farm and they started their family. Besides raising her two children, she worked in Ipswich at the Grocery Store, Floral Shop and the Gambles Hardware Store. Ione was also the Powell News correspondent for the Ipswich Tribune for many years.
Adolph died in 1980 and Ione remained on the farm until moving to Ipswich in 1987. She was a kind and caring soul who put the needs and wants of others before her own. While living in Ipswich she cared for her ailing sister-in-law.
Ione loved to entertain. She most enjoyed visits from her family and would always have more than enough food prepared so that she could send some food home with those who visited. The smell and taste of her apple pie is memory that her family won't forget. She loved to bake and made wedding cakes and birthday cakes for many area residents.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Sunshine Extension Club for 50 years and the Twentieth Century Club.
Ione died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Manor Care Health Care Center in Aberdeen.
